Monthly per-terminal and per-location fees. Volume pricing for multi-unit groups. Free months for annual prepay. These are all negotiable, especially for chains.
Terminal, KDS, kiosk, and handheld pricing. Bulk pricing for 5+ terminals. Extended warranty terms. Hardware often has the most room to move.
Setup, installation, and onboarding fees that vendors quote at $500–$2,000+ per location. Frequently waived or significantly reduced for multi-unit deals.
The biggest lever. Toast Payments and Clover/Fiserv default rates are almost never the best you can get. We negotiate processing as a separate deal or find a better processor altogether.
Length of commitment, auto-renewal clauses, early termination fees. We review every contract before you sign and flag anything that could cost you later.
Some vendors will lock your processing rate for 12–24 months. Worth pushing for — protects you against rate creep after the honeymoon period ends.
Toast pushes Toast Payments. Clover pushes Fiserv. Both make significant margin on processing — often 0.5%–1.0% above what's competitive. On $200K/month in card volume, that's $1,000–$2,000 in unnecessary fees every single month.
